I am not a big fan of reality television, but I do watch Celebrity Apprentice. I like that it is a business competion that raises money for charity. I was amused this season at the women of the cast that had so much plastic surgery. I was so distracted by them that I couldn’t concentrate on the show or the task at hand. I wondered why these women who are truly beautiful would do this to themselves and not embrace their age.
I then ran across and article about Lent (hang on this will all make sense). Lent is making you aware of mortality “from dirt you came and to dirt you will return.” This sounds a bit depressing but we need to really think about this. We are all going to die. Plastic surgery is a 20 billion dollar a year industry, which tricks us into believing we are immortal or “deathless”. The American culture we live in is so obsessed with maintaining youth and a youthful appearance that it is sad. No one can escape death and it doesn’t matter how much you tweek and sculpt your body you will die. It saddens me that age is not accepted with grace and honor but instead with sad disregard.
Do not regret growing older, it is a privilege denied to many.
