Olive Tree

Posted on Jan 2, 2015 by in Christian Life

I received a gift from my dad for Christmas and I keep reflecting on what it means to me.  My dad is 74 and has always done woodworking.  He has made some of the most beautiful pieces of furniture that will be cherished for generations to come.  I received a pen made out of olive wood from Jerusalem.  Historically, the olive tree’s leafy branches are considered a symbol of abundance, glory and peace.  Olive oil has also been considered sacred since ancient times.  It is a symbol of peace, wisdom, glory, fertility, power and pureness.  The olive tree and olives are mentioned in the Bible over 30 times in both the New and Old Testaments.  Many of these trees are over 300 years old and some have been growing since the time of Christ.  You may estimate the age of a particular piece by examining its grain.  Older trees have a dark grain while younger trees exhibit a lighter grain color.   This pen means many of these things to me.  I hope when  I use it to write, I remember all that the olive wood represents and write with wisdom, peace and pureness.  I also understand that as the olive wood ages it becomes engrained with colors of life as we all do, so remember that life adds many grains to our stories so be proud of what you are and thankful you are not all one grain.
